Cape Town Photography Workshop: Landscape & Culture

Improve Your Photography While Seeing A Unique Side of Cape Town

Whether you’re a landscape, documentary or travel photographer, Cape Town’s plethora of lineages and cultures, ocean bays and looming mountains, trendy eateries and gritty townships will tease your imagination and feed your creative eye. We’ll guide you through the Table Mountain National Park, Boulders Beach, Cape Point and Chapman’s Peak so that you may capture – with a fresh take – some of the world’s most photographed landscapes. This Cape Town photography workshop will spark your curiosity in new and different lives through a visit to a fiercely energetic but under-serviced township, time with local fishermen, and an exploration into the historically rich Cape Malay quarter. Two professional photographers will support you on your journey, providing insight into the technical and interpersonal challenges of making standout images.

You can combine this workshop with our Kruger Wildlife photography workshop, which is also hosted by National Geographic photographer Tyrone Turner.

Highlights

Explore the many sides of Cape Town, one of the most stunning cities in the world, through your lens Receive photographic guidance by acclaimed National Geographic photographer Tyrone Turner and born-and-bred Capetonian Sarah Isaacs Explore and capture Cape Town’s cultural and economic diversity, gaining insight into the “softer”, and often more challenging, interpersonal aspects of photography Frame the city in its impressive natural surroundings, which includes spectacular mountains and rugged coast lines Improve your photography through personalised tutoring Discover for yourself if Cape Town is indeed this world’s most beautiful city.

Day 1 Arrival at Cape Town International Airport, where you'll be met by one of our team members and taken on the short drive to our lodge. In the evening, we'll go through what's in store for the following days.

Day 2 We'll start the day with panoramic views of the city bowl and surrounds with a cable-car trip up Table Mountain, recently named one of the new Seven Natural Wonders of the World. From there we’ll explore the scenic Cape Peninsula with stops at Boulders Beach, home to a breeding colony of over 2000 endangered African Penguins, Cape Point, Africa’s most southern tip, and Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the world’s most spectacular marine drives.

Day 3 We’ll continue our exploration of the magnificent Cape Peninsula, focusing this time on its cultural highlights. Improve your eye for situational portraiture and documentary photography with visits to the colourful and historical St James bathhouses and Kalk Bay’s local fishermen. In the afternoon you’ll have time to rest, before heading out for Golden Hour at Kloof Corner, an elevated and little-known viewpoint where you can enjoy the switch from day to night in perfect peace and quiet.

Day 4 Together with a local guide, we’ll venture into Cape Town’s grittier side with a daylong visit to Khayelitsha Township and lunch at Mzolis, one of the city’s most vibrant lunch spots. After an afternoon rest, we’ll continue to Big Bay, where you’ll be treated to the iconic view of Table Mountain across a sprawling blue bay.

Day 5 Continuing with the richly cultural side of Cape Town, we’ll start the day with an optional sunrise visit to the Adderley Street Flower Market, where Cape Malay women have been selling flowers for generations. After breakfast we’ll delve deeper into Cape Malay culture with a visit to the Bokaap, an inner-city neighbourhood decorated by the calling sound of the Imam, a beautiful mosque, spice shops and row upon row of brightly painted homes. Gain intimate insight into the lives of Malay locals and the last of the “old” Bokaap generation, as homes passed down from generation to generation are now being sold off to wealthy new buyers. After an afternoon rest, experience Cape Town’s nightlife with First Thursdays, an arts and culture street festival held once a month.

Day 6 We'll start the day practicing street photography in the up-and-coming Woodstock neighbourhood, known for its street art and raw urban feel. We’ll complete the workshop with an optional picnic at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens before we wrap up the workshop and say our goodbyes.
